Friday Favorites

A fairly low-key Friday. I'm not quite twiddling my thumbs, but things are coming in at a pace I feel like I can enjoy the day. Tomorrow we go apple picking! It's time for MacIntosh apples, my ultimate favorite. And I'm determined to get some good baking apples for my umpteenth time trying to bake an apple pie. I'm sure I've mentioned this in the past, but my apple pies end up looking lovely but tasting soggy. Yeah, applesauce pies are my specialty. Any advice?

No advice for you on the soggy apples. Sorry. I have never made an apple pie. I have done apple crisp though.

Jewels, if you don't want to have saucy apple pies (which I actually think are much better than the alternative) don't use macintosh apples, use something like granny smith, that is a crisper apple, cut your apple slices larger and do not bake for as long. Hope this helps and am looking forward to tomorrow!

have fun apple picking! Do you bake your pastry blind first? That usually helps as the pastry is crisper when you add the filling.
Love your favourites today, especially kwilsons bird illustrations

I am in love with that necklace...so pretty!!

I'm not much of a baker, but yeah, I think certain apples are better for pies...granny smith are best, I think.

And if that doesn't work...you could try to make your own applesauce! :)

julia,
use granny smith apples for the pie. they are the best for pies. the reason your apples are getting soggy, too much moisture in the apple (McIntosh are my favorite too, they're juice and sweeter! were the granny is more tart) hence the soggy. so make sure you use the recommended amount of sugar for the tartness.
i am not good at making pies myself, i am still practicing. I called my mum who makes the best apple pie in the world:)
loving your favorites today! and also thanks for the info on bliss shop opening! i love her work.
if you need any other pie advise, let me know and i call call my mum again, she loves teaching people to bake!

Another set of sweet items. I adore anything smocked...just brings me back to my childhood. My mother used to make my sister and I matching smocked outfits.
