Cod Fish, filters and macaroons

I can't seem to sleep past 6:30 this week (and past weekend for that matter). Not that I mind horribly, I tend to get a lot more accomplished in the wee parts of the morning. I put on the coffee, check my email, read a book, watch Andrew sleep. He's much more elegant of a sleeper than I. I wake up with my top lip adhered to my gums, mouth hanging wide open--like the unnerving combination of a cod fish and rabbit. Not very pretty.

The photograph is of me on one of our walks down to Borders this past weekend. I have to ask, it's a very bloggy-sort of question: do you like filters? Digital filters you can administer to your photographs to pump the saturation, soften the edges. I'm on the fence about them and would love to know what you think!

Coconut Macaroons

1 1/3 cup of flaked coconut 1/3 cup of sugar 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Stir all dry ingredients together. Add egg whites and vanilla. Mix well. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto a greased sheet and bake for 20 minutes in a 325 degree oven.

Voila! You have macaroons. I think I ended up baking mine for 23 minutes, taking them out when they were caramelly brown at the bottom. Be prepared, they call to you the moment they are out of the oven. Taste wonderful with chai tea!

I've been waking up earlier and earlier as well. Maybe I should go to bed earlier too. The lack of sleep is starting to make me a little wonky :-) Love that picture--I'm all for digital filters, they're fun and pretty!!

i love your photo and think the filter you used makes it really dreamy. for other people's photos, i definitely like filters. they can totally change the mood. there's nothing wrong with using them as a lot of manipulation can be done in the dark room with negatives, so it's kind of similar.

for my own, i'm on the fence about them. i've tried using filters/textures, but don't really enjoy spending a lot of computer time on my photos in that way. i'm happiest when i take a nice photo requiring only a few basic tweaks in photoshop. i suppose it's the challenge of trying to create a mood from the onset.

I am all about what ever angle gets your version of you aesthetic vision across to the rest of us.

Didn't know Macaroons are so simple!
I buy the gluten free ones, and eat them straight from the box. Be well.

I like the whimsical feel the filters can give, but they can be overused!

Lovely photo!

You can't sleep past 6:30?? You poor thing! I can definitely sleep in later.

And I don't have photoshop, so no filters for me :)

I do like filters. If done correctly. There are quite a few that I almost always use (high pass).. That being said- your filtered photo is beautiful :)

Thanks for the wonderful recipe. I'm usually an early riser (if I don't stay up too late). I enjoy being up before the sun, it is a new day and very few have touched.
As for filters it depends on what you are trying to capture. I like the filter on your photo it soft and dreamy, sort of ties in to how you talk about getting up early, watching your love sleep...
Enjoy! xoxo

I have been wanting to try a macaroon! As for the filter...well we try to keep our photos as close to out of camera as possible. Of course, this just has to do with the type of photography we do. I do love your photo though. quite dreamy.

Mmmm coconut macaroons... Now I need to go get some coconut! I like the look of filters sometimes. Other times, I feel they're a tad too dreamy. But that's just me :)

I like the dreamy look they can make. I think they can be overused at times though. (Cute skirt!)

I'm an early riser and sooo much can get done before the rest of the world awakens. I am not a particular fan of filters as I just can't seem to get them to do what I want. Not the filters fault, but my ignorance at the correct usage.
The macarroons sound delicious!

I can't seem to wake up at all this week, which is terrible because I have class! I'm not to fond of filters personally, I just like the raw goodness of film.

I wish I could get myself out of bed at 6:30! I used to be an early riser but this summer I seem to be sleeping later and later! Terrible.

Lovely photo! I too wake early but it is mainly against my will to feed two hungry babies! Your 6:30 am time sounds lovely! As for filters - I like them sometimes, it depends. I don't use them that much, but that's because I don't take that artsy of photos...wish I did, perhaps one day!

Love the macaroon recipe, definitely one to try out today - another work avoidance tactic! I am such an early riser - if only I could manage to go to bed early to counteract the early starts!!

I love your photo and I have been enjoying the morning lately just because it is so much cooler. I think filters can look great when they aren't overdone. I have to watch myself sometimes. :)

Wee hours of the morning?! I'm dead to the world at these hours. Wish I were an early riser though. Been trying. But it's just so hard. ;)

Aw, the funny thing is, I bet Andrew thinks your adorable when you sleep!

I've always been an early riser--I honestly wish I could sleep late some days but not this lifetime, I guess!

Hi Julia! I have been following your blog for some time and never commented, but i wanted to say how sweet I think it is, your relationship, your watching Andrew sleep...adorable and loving! I love coming to your blog, you are elegant in your writing and it seems as though you have this found calmness in your words. Thanks for being so inspiring!

Lovely post today! :) I have been getting up before Jameson, and happen to be putting the tea on! ;) You've inspired me to get up and get some things done, rather than force myself to snooze longer! :)
