Caliope

I snagged some sunlight this afternoon! Hurray! I was able to take a few pictures of my new journal set. The Caliope Journals! I had a discussion a few days ago with a good friend of mine about the different kinds of names and words we loved to say. Caliope is such a fun word to say :)

Along with Penelope, Marjorie, chrysanthemum, kismet, Tristan, marmalade, cheshire! I love how they kiss your mouth when you say them!

Charter is from the devil

Good morning! I'm taking a five minute break to send you a quick hello! My internet at home is still offline, much to my dismay. Also, let me take a moment to say that quality customer service from Charter internet is hard to come by (I turn light pink with conservative rage when I think about the number of incompetent people I talked to on the phone last night). Okay *smooths down her frazzles* now, onto happier thoughts: beautiful prints by pleasebestill!

This weekend Andrew has a surprise planned for my birthday. He's been planning it for over four months now, and it's quite cute when he talks about it. We're heading south west, but that's about all I know. I believe the activity will be slightly weather dependent, which makes me curious. I can't ask any more questions, I've been cut off! I'll keep you posted!

The Peach Tree

I have the thrill of introducing you to The Peach Tree! A dear friend and brilliantly creative soul, Ms Peach Tree's shop is filled to the brim with priceless creations, ranging from delicate earrings to exquisite necklaces! Her blog is so clever and generous and inspiring as well, you must go and see!

PS. As a quick note, I'm presently having internet difficulties at home, so my posts may be infrequent (we're hoping this glitch gets fixed pronto). In mean time, enjoy this interview!

1. What do you create?
I piece together stones and semi precious stones into wearable creations.

2. What led you to take up your craft?
My boyfriend and I have a passion for rocks and minerals. My collection was growing at such a rate we got to talking about other directions we could go with it that wouldn't clutter up our itty bitty apartment :) I had always found it difficult to find some of my favorites (you always see the carnelian, turquoise and quartz in bounty) so here we are!

3. Which part of your work do you most enjoy?
I truly love all of it. The selection of stones, receiving and cataloging of stones, then the combining and assemblage. It's all pretty awesome. But that all goes along with my tireless attention to detail....

4. Which part do you find most trying?
Finding specific gems can be particularly exhausting. Especially if someone has come to me specifically for a custom piece and I just can't get my hands on the materials.
5. Where do you get your inspiration?
Oh my, everywhere! I love being outside and taking pictures of everything around us. It's surprising even to me that there is so much nature at the fingertips of Brooklyn. We never run out of new places to explore. Whether it be a safari adventure at our local zoo, visiting the old train cars down in Red Hook or taking the long hill down to DUMBO to laze past the old Tobacco Warehouse to the waterfront.

7. What is your favorite medium to work with?
Hmm, that's tough. I'd say Labradorite is one of my favorites for it's versatility and cameleon like coloring.
8. What is your favorite item that you have purchased off of Etsy?
That's a toughie. I'd have to see this troop of owls that we got from audelaine back when I was just a buyer on etsy :) Here's one of the family of 5 that we got:http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=6980196

9. What is your favorite item in your shop right now?
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10042353 That would have to be it right now. It's so bold and sexy :)

10. What are your favorite top three items from other artists shops?
This dress from gaiaconceptions. I've had to re heart it about 4 times already!http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11024807
This photograph from HeidiShannonhttp://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8817945 And this little French dude from eikumpelhttp://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7743762

11. What undiscovered artisans would you recommend the world to know?
So many! Everyone that I've ever done a feature on over at the Peach blog. Otherwise, let's see:

Friday Favorites

Thank you all so much for the heartfelt well wishes! You have no idea how much your words lifted the gloom of the day and the fuzziness of my achy head. The first week at the new job has ended successfully, even with the slight hiccup in the middle of the week, I have to say I'm going to love this new chapter in my life. But, I'm sure a lot of us say such things at the beginning! You guys have all helped, thank you! Thank you *hugs*!

It's my Friday Favorites time! And I've scoured my Etsy favorites for some yummy gems:

1. Calling Cards of Mysterious Ladies, by charmfoundry (isn't this a great title?)
2. Lemon Lime Slices, from LoveLeeSoaps
3. 3 Flowers, by rosetutu
4. Sunset, by ThreeFiveEightyFive

Fabulous artists, beautiful creations! Enjoy!

Third day on the job

It went sort of like this: I wake up ungodly early to drive to my first photo shoot two hours away! Arrive, help with photo shoot. Fun, fun! Start getting sick. The mother of all migraines sets in and I'm escorted to Prompt Care. I sign up, but can't wait for the doctor, so I go sleep in the back of the car. Get woken up by a Madison co-worker saying something to the fact that I need to stay at the photo shoot. Go back to photo shoot. Photo people say I need to go home, silly me, I'm sick. Can't stay curled up in the back of the car forever, start to drive home. Get another call from Milwaukee co-worker. She tells me stop where ever I am, she's coming to rescue me (she's only a half hour away). I cry, amazed that anyone knew I was in such pain. My supervisor picks up Andrew at school and drives half-way to meet us. I transfer cars and I'm driven home.

If you've never had a migraine, I'm sure this story will sound ridiculous. If you have, you'll know how incredible it felt to know that I was rescued half-way to hell.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know why I didn't write yesterday! I wanted to post this beautiful image from IreneSuchocki, to show you there's great beauty in the fuzzy lines. Fuzzy lines are all you see with migraines.

I'm back to bed now. Sending love your way!

Nuthatch Notes

I want to take a moment to introduce you to one of my favorite newbies, NuthatchNotes :) She's taken her love of birds, nature, and note cards and transformed the traditional snail mail into something exquisite and charming! I could gush endlessly about her packaging as well, her hand made bags and sets are so cute! Keep your eyes peeled for her new blog, it's supposed to make an entrance soon. You will wonder when she's been all your life!

1. What do you create?

I create handmade cards, gifting supplies, and stationery using a variety of papers and special accents. I try to offer products with unique styles ranging from modern simplicity to Victorian elegance. Right now my Etsy sight only has the note cards and gift tags, but I am currently working on some sets of gift bags and gift wrap as well.

2. What led you to take up your craft?
I started making cards last summer when I would get this nagging need to be creative and productive with my down time at home. I originally started with sewing projects but would find myself losing interest about half way through. Making cards was a craft that made it possible to start something and finish it in one evening. Also, I still had some great fabrics from my miscellaneous sewing projects, so I used those to make the drawstring packages for my gift cards. Once I got started, I was hooked. Now it is dangerous for me to walk into a paper goods store without finding at least 4-5 new paper designs to work into my cards. I love colors and textures as well as using my hands to create, so crafting cards and stationery gives me the chance to give in to my passions.

3. Which part of your work do you most enjoy?
My favorite part of my work is that moment when that moment of inspiration finally hits and you know that a certain combination of colors and shapes would be perfect together. Then, once the first card is together, there is that relief in knowing that the rest of the set will be a bit easier now that the theme or “look” has been established.

4. Which part do you find most trying?
The most trying part for me is wishing I had all of the helpful little gadgets that could make my card making more efficient. At the same time, there is something very satisfying in making everything using the most basic of tools. I’m still learning the techniques and best methods for things.

5. Where do you get your inspiration?
I guess I really get my inspiration from a few sources. Sometimes it is a fun paper texture or pattern that leads to a certain card design. I frequently draw inspiration from natural and wildlife elements that you’ll find in many of my notes: birds, leaves, flowers, and the like. You’ll see a bird theme in many of my products.

7. What is your favorite medium to work with?
I would have to say that embossing powder is one of my favorite mediums. I love the almost magical transition it goes through with the addition of heat. I also like how it can take a simple stamp design and turn it into something so polished and finished looking.

8. What is your favorite item that you have purchased off of Etsy?
I’m still just in the beginning exploration stages of the Etsy world, but of the things I have purchased, I really like the bird prints that I recently found at MincingMockingbird’s shop. I bought a set of three that will soon be hung in my hallway at home. There is the bird thing again…

9. What is your favorite item in your shop right now?
I like the Classic Oak Notes that are listed in my shop right now. It is a set of 6 notes made from mossy green card stock with a charming plaid edge and a bright white oak tree embossed on the front. A folded sheet of crisp white paper is carefully stitched inside, and edged with a stamp border cut. The notes are then packaged in a cute little brightly colored drawstring bag with a red polka dot ribbon. I colors used on the notes make me think of relaxing with a picnic lunch under the shade of a great old oak tree.

10. What are your favorite top three items from other artist's shops?
Ooh, it is always fun to pick out the favorites! Every day I find something new to add. Here are a few of my recent favorites:

1. Little Bird Screenprinted Flat notes by Sarahparrott825—actually bought a set of these
2. Arabian Journal by RedOtter
3. Tree Silouhette Silk-lined clutch from Redrubyrose

11. What undiscovered artisans would you recommend the world to know?
I met a few new artists in the “Newbie” chat room on Etsy the other day. Here are a few that I thought were awesome:
1. Poisdoux. Absolutely charming knitted work! The shop had a pair of green and purple booties that instantly made me wish for little baby feet to put them on.
2. DarlingDexter had charming note cards and paper goods. I especially liked the Gocco Thank You cards.

New job is awesome!

Hello! It feels like ages since I last wrote. I'm so glad everyone enjoyed the splendors of Picciolo's work :) They are divine pieces. I'm waiting, anxiously, for my little purple key chain to arrive in the mail! By the way, I came home today to these amazing little diddies :) They wow me, thank you Wunderbug!

So, the old job has gone away, and the new job is here, and it is awesome! Of course I'm in the middle of mayhem right now, all first days are like this. It's like the first day of college, you go to three classes and sit, in shock, nearly numb, with the amount of stimulus and expectations pounding you at every turn. I'm exhausted! And, I have to ask, heels aren't really made for every day use, right? I feel like my poor feet have gone through an exercise in contortion. Tomorrow: sandals!

I've posted three pictures from JCrew's spring/summer line! They make heels look like slippers! Beautiful, feminine and completely care free! Enjoy!

YooHoo!

My Midweek YooHoo :) Is to Picciolo! Her key chains, pouches, boxes, and fabric art are all full of color, exquisite details and fine craftsmanship! Here is a link to her cute shop, and here's a link to her fabulous blog!

Today is my last day of work at my old job. I'm slowly backing up projects, deleting emails and emptying folders. It would be a sad business if it wasn't so relieving. I've been ready for this day for a while. If you were to ask my friends, I've been ready for months! As a sort of treat, I'm heading to Duluth, Minnesota, for some time with friends and family this weekend. And some quality relaxation by the lake! That said, I'll probably be absent for the next couple of days, but I'll try and post pictures soon :)

Tealan's Shop of Paintings

One of the artists from PaPaYa, over at Liquid Sky Arts, posted this link to a shop with affordable, LARGE paintings! Gorgeous paintings! I keep dreaming about that studio space of mine. I think there will be walls full of artwork, shelves full of books, and plenty of nooks and crannies to place special little baubles and bowls of inspiration!

Also, news over here: the ever wonderful and inspirational Cozy Up has given The Red Otter Shop an "E for Excellence"! It's a blog award! I'm so honored! SO utterly tickled pink! Other blogs she has declared Excellent (and some of my favorites) were picciolo and Blaze Danielle! Thank you Cozy Up! Thank you!

I would like to pass on the "E for Excellent" award to these incredible blogs because of their unique beauty and encouragement to fellow artists and writers: The Peach Tree, S.HOPtalk, Black*Eiffel, Art Kitten, Wunderbug! You guys are wonderful!

Chartreuse

My favorite font at present in a lovely spring chartreuse!

This will be a short post today as I have a list a mile long of the things that I need to do. There's also another list of all the things I should do and another one with all the things I want to do. I say "should do" because it gives me an out if I don't finish them all today.

I don't think I've mentioned this before, but I'm in the middle of switching jobs! I've been working from home for a small educational children's book company for the past three years. It has been a wonderful experience, but I'm discovering I need to interact with people again. I'll be starting my new job at an engineering consulting firm on Monday. Oi! I'm so excited! And so nervous! Butterflies in my tummy!

Monday Inspiration

There's a beautiful ray of sunshine pouring warmth into our wee little apartment this morning. Makes my plants very happy! Makes me very happy! Yesterday I hiked over to my favorite coffee shop and met Andrew for brunch. They have a fabulous mixed fruit parfait! I made a small list of things I wanted to do yesterday: 1. take a bubble bath 2. make chocolate chip cookies 3. watch a girly movie and 4. finish my graphic novel, Rex Mundi. And I did them ALL! Whoot, whoot! The cookies unfortunately turned out to be more like chocolate chip brittle than cookies. Oi!

I wanted to share some of Heather's bright and beautiful studio photos! Monday inspiration!

Peter Pan

This past Christmas found Andrew and I attending the Madison Ballet's production of the Nutcracker. Its quickly becoming a tradition for us, something to help get us in the Christmas spirit. I had bought the tickets over the phone, specifically asking the man which seats would be best, where in the balcony, how close to the center. When Andrew and I arrived we settled into our seats and looked through our program. And the conversation went something like this:

A: Hey Julia, did you see this? They're putting on a production of Peter Pan this spring! Wouldn't you like to go?
J: No, not really. I feel like I've seen Peter Pan so many times, I don't need to see the ballet.
A: Oh, okay.

later on

J: Aren't these seats great! I love how high we are.
A: But don't you think we could see more if we were on the auditorium floor? I mean, we would be really close that way.
J: Oh, I don't think so, these are the best seats in the house, or so the guy said.
A: Yeah, these are nice. . .

Fairly normal conversation, you might say. Well, come Christmas morning, I'm opening my present from Andrew and what do you know, tickets! Tickets to see Peter Pan. And guess what, they're floor seats! Unbeknownst to me, Andrew had purchased these tickets long before the Nutcracker. Oi! I felt like such a twit.

So, short story long, Andrew and I went and saw Peter Pan last night at the most incredible Capitol Theater down town Madison. The ballet was fantastic! Something I've never seen before! We were enchanted! The seats, on the floor, close to the stage, were perfect. It couldn't have been a better Christmas gift.

Morning Person

Good morning! I just received an email from my boss accusing me of being a morning person! *grins* I work remotely, at present, and simply mossey over to my desk in the corner of my living room to "officially" start my work day. I laughed when she said that because I'm still in my pjs and my hair looks like a tornado hit it. My mascara, that I didn't wash off last night, is gooped somewhere on my cheek. If someone were to come to my door right now I would pretend I wasn't here simply to spare them the horror of seeing me. Andrew had to make the tea this morning because I still wasn't functioning at 7:00, and I didn't make him his lunch this morning either because the thought of putting together a tuna sandwich seemed like an impossible feat involving dexterity and coordination my fingers did not possess. He'll go out for soup instead! So, I sent my boss an email this morning at 8:30, and voila, I'm a morning person. Isn't that great? :)

Here are my Friday Favorites! I hope you thoroughly enjoy these pieces!

1. Nest Egg by CafeBaudelaire
2. Afternoon Tea Jacket by pinkroses1220
3. Dainty Yellow Bowl by burrobranch
4. Capri by evesimone

Wellington Weather

It's cold and rainy here today. Dreary! I'm sure the trees and flowers, along with the ducks, are all enjoying this weather. I'm thinking I need to put my woolies back on! And when I do venture from my snug apartment I'll be wishing I had a pair of these: a trusty pair of Wellingtons. We call them Wellies over here!

1. Sugar Plum 2. The Chasseur 3. Pink Rubber Boots 4. Houndstooth 5. Payless Plaid

YooHoo!

This is my weekly YooHoo! To the fabulous artist of JunkyardSam. Holy moses, doesn't this print make you long for the warmth and sunshine of summer? You should check out the other seasons they have in their shop :)

It's still rainy and cold here this morning, NOT like this sunny print. Andrew's rushing about, nearly late for his bus, and I'm still in my pj's "Etsying." That's what he calls flipping through treasuries, checking the new artists in the Gift Guides, or reading through fellow Etsiers blogs. I'm Etsying!

And another quick call out to Lula Boutique! She just showcased her mum's birthday items she bought off of Etsy! Hurray for birthday surprises from Etsy :)

Tuesday Morning Inspiration

Inspiration, darling! That's pretty much all I can say, INSPIRATION! A beautifully laid out magazine spread makes me incredibly happy. I'm such a dork! I'm drawn to these colors, the textures in the paper and fabric and the way the art director was able to convey such elegance again and again. Hurray for Rebecca Thuss!

Put on something comfy (or stay in something comfy), start up some inspirational music (for me it would be the Sabrina sountrack, the new one), pull out your journal and enjoy this spring morning with me!

Lists

I'm a huge fan of lists. I love writing out what I have to do each day. I love creating lists of dreams in my journal, usually coupled with postcards and pictures to help me visualize them. I have lists of travel destinations, crafts to learn, people to write, favorite artists, favorite quotes (I love this poem), favorite recipes!

Here's one of my lists:
1. Learn how to silk screen
2. Visit the East Coast
3. Organize my book supplies *grins*
4. Go see Feist in concert
5. Someday have enough space, time and money to create my own studio!

Be Happy Now!

Hello everyone! I've been chillin' all weekend, it's been heaven. Andrew and I went for a long hike yesterday morning and got sunburnt! Amazing, first time this year! Of course with so much sunshine and fresh air we were completely useless to society the rest of the day, grim. Hello couch potatoes!

{A Red Otter Interview }

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to a fabulous new artist on Etsy, behappynow! Her fanciful illustrations are colorful, rich, and quite humorous. I love her use of color and type in her work! Be sure to check out her adorable mini books too :)

1. What do you create?
I aim to create optimistic art, which reminds us that life is good. And if it's not bright and shiny right now, there's always a hope for better. And in order to improve it, only you can change your life, in every direction you choose. My intention is to make people smile when they see my work, this way they'll have at least one moment of bliss a day.

2. What led you to take up your craft?
My father really loves art, and i've been his reason to begin drawing. He wanted to draw, and i remember these sunny days in my childhood when we drew together. He taught me to draw, and i continued it, while this summer i finish my Design Graduation with majoring in illustration.

3. Which part of your work do you most enjoy?
In one sentence, i enjoy working without any technologies, just me and my pens and pencils. Instead of upgrading my computer i would rather get more instruments to draw with. I never create in silence but only listening to some good, relaxing music from internet radio.

4. Which part do you find most trying?
Integrating typographic elements in my work always been a a challenge for me. But, at the same time i'm much interested in combination of illustration and typography altogether. I do like how letter shapes take place within colorful compositions, and the consequential relations to each other of the ingredients. i'm really into making handmade typography very very soon, when i'll have more time for this wonderful and super-pleasing research.

5. Where do you get your inspiration?
Everywhere! Enough to make a look onto surrounding environment just to have a flood of inspirations. Various relationships and situations inspire me most. These include of course humans, animals, animated characters, even fish! Through this vast amount of fictional characters i'm trying to make imposition and metaphor on people, and their world they live in.

7. What is your favorite medium to work with?
My moleskine! When i draw in my lovely sketchbook, i can allow myself to experiment and lift the limits of self-criticism. It gives me more freedom and generally speaking, i enjoy drawing proccess much more. I really like the paper it's made from, it's format and rounded corners, love the flipping of it, it's tiny bookmark, and that ispiring side pocket...

8. What is your favorite item that you have purchased off of Etsy?
Every item i decide to buy is a favorite, but i always look for more. Currently (and i still not bought it, don't know really why) it is a wonderful work of this artist: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5174302.

9. What is your favorite item in your shop right now?
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10521833

10. What are your favorite top three items from other artists shops?
1. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10155839
2. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10406590
3. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=10379548

12. What undiscovered artisans would you recommend the world to know?
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5366324
13. What is the best advice you have ever received?
Just do what you feel right. To be yourself..
